Few weeks back, I got to meet a converted Muslim (From Hinduism) and few days back I yet got a spectacle of his brilliant knowledge. A guy wearing a bright red panjabi greeted us and the logo of his company- Robi was there. Then he called me aside and said, “Thankfully his panjabi is not fully red, do you know that wearing solid red is impermissible in Islam?” I actually know this but the thing is the scholars have differed in opinions over this issue. During this time, I thought of two separate Hadiths. In the first Hadith, it is mentioned:
Al-Baraa (rah.) said: “The Messenger of Allah (saw.) had hair down to his earlobes. I saw him wearing a red hullah, and I have never seen anyone more handsome than him.”
Reference: Sunan Abu Dawood, 4072; Sunan Ibn Maajah, 3599. Classed as Sahih by Imam Al-Albani (r.) in his – Sahih Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 768.
Then there is another Hadith:
Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (rah.) said: “I was forbidden (to wear) red garments and gold rings, and to recite Qur’aan in rukoo’.”
Reference: Sunan an-Nasa’i, Hadith 5171. Imaam al-Albani (r.) said: Its Isnad is Sahih. Sahih Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith 1068
So for the differences in opinion regarding this I was a bit sluggish in providing him a proper explanation as I myself was confused about this matter. Then he replied taking a very unconventional angle, he asked me, “Do you know who is Abu Lu’ Lu’?
I could not recall the name properly, so I replied, “No, I don’t.”
“He is the murderer of Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (rah.).”
“Oh now that you mentioned it, isn’t he is the slave who got enraged at Umar (rah.) thinking that he had done him injustice so thought of killing him?”
“Yes and on top of that he used to be fire-worshiper, a mushirk and whenever he used to worship, he used to wear red, fire-worshipers all wear bright red whenever they perform their ritual so that’s why Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) banned the wearing of red clothes. But clothes which have a mixed color along with red is permissible.
The way he explained this issue, I have never heard or read anything about it from anyone. I was marveled and thrilled by this, was left speechless.
This person has only 1.5 years of being a Muslim, from the way I see him perhaps even 10 times more knowledgeable than I am and he already knows how to evaluate fatwas from historical context and he even can recall minor characters from Islamic history. I actually had been waiting for a person like him- someone around my age who would always be enthusiastic to talk about Islam and challenge my own knowledge and make me feel like I know nothing and be ashamed over my level of Imaan so that it will instigate me into being more hungry into gaining knowledge about the Deen,
Alhammdulillah, thank you Allah so much for a friend like him to help me quantify my own Imaan and with whom I can actually, confidently talk about the less explored part of Islam…
